Using an alarm clock to wake up – there is a better way
Do you jump up from a sound sleep in the
morning all flustered when you hear the blaring alarm clock go off. Do you
stumble out of bed groggily, wishing you could go back to bed? If so,
the alarm clock is not doing you any favors.
Why not try to wake up without an alarm clock?
Do you want to try and train yourself to get up without the jarring
noise of the alarm? The key is understanding how to use your natural
circadian rhythm to your benefit. When you let your natural rhythm wake
you up in the morning, you naturally feel well rested and ready to get up.
How can this be done?
First, you must commit to learning to wake up in the morning naturally. This means working on it every single day. For you to stop using an alarm, you need to create a consistent sleep/wake cycle from day to day. Going to sleep at the same time every night as well as waking up at the same time every day allows your body to reset your internal clock. If you can successfully reset your internal clock, it will become accustomed to waking up at the same time every day. Over time, your body will naturally start prepping itself to be awake at the correct time. This creates a new habit that will enforce your internal alarm clock to wake you up naturally instead of waking up to an alarm. However, during this process you should set an alarm just in case.
The
biggest hurdle to this tip is the weekend.
Many people, myself included,
wake up at 6am all week and then sleep in till noon on Saturday. The general
rule of thumb is to wake up no later than an hour after your normal waking
time, otherwise you can destroy any internal clock setting.
