Is eating a big meal before bed a good thing?
Eating late at night and having a full tummy
seems to be a good idea as you are eating. Dinner can sometimes happen
late in the evening, or relaxing before bed has you reaching for that bowl of ice
cream. But it is recommended that you avoid large meals or big snacks 2
to 3 hours before going to sleep. If not, indigestion may be your
nighttime companion instead of solid sleep. When you sleep, your body does all the restorative work that it is unable to do during the day. So when your digestive system is working hard on digesting that meal, your
body is unable to work all the important duties is has during sleep. This can result in indigestion as well as getting less quality sleep.
Nicotine, caffeine and alcohol deserve caution
too. Nicotine and caffeine are stimulants and can take hours to wear off
affecting your quality of sleep. Alcohol can make you feel sleepy, but it
will disrupt sleep in the middle of the night and mess with your deep sleep
rhythms.
