Get enough sleep before you drive

Getting a good night's rest is not only important for your mental and physical health, it's necessary for being a safe driver. In order to have the reflexes and quick decision making abilities to drive safely, you must get sleep. Driving while drowsy contributes to almost 100,000 accidents a year according to the National Highway Safety Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation. They also report that 1500 deaths per year result from drivers falling asleep behind the wheel. Even though 60% of Americans have reported driving while feeling sleepy, we must do our part to reduce the risk.

To help counter sleepy driving, the National Sleep Foundation offers these tips:

  • On long drives, take a break every 2 hours.
  • Adult drivers should get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night.
  • Teenage drivers should be 8-1/2 to 9-1/2 hours of sleep each night.
  • Drive with a friend or family member who can engage you in conversation and also take a turn driving.
  • Avoid alcohol and sedating drugs such as antihistamines, benzodiazepines, and narcotics.

Not sure if it's safe for you to drive? Know the signs of drowsy driving:
